Top 10 Beaches to Visit on Your Australian Vacation

July 09, 20239 min read

Australia, with its breathtaking landscapes and diverse natural wonders, is one of the top destinations around the world for travelers seeking a vacation filled with sun and surf. Renowned for its pristine coastlines and stunning beaches, the sun-kissed island continent offers beach experiences like no other.

Australian beaches are renowned for their untouched natural beauty. With crystal-clear waters, powdery white and golden sands, and dramatic coastal backdrops, these beaches are a centerpiece for many travelers’ Australian vacations.

From secluded coves and hidden bays to bustling beachside hubs, Australia's coastline offers a diverse range of beach experiences. Whether you seek tranquility and solitude or vibrant energy, surfing, diving, and water sports, there is an Australian beach to suit every vacationer’s preference.

With warm summers and mild winters in many coastal regions, Australia's temperate climate ensures that vacationers can enjoy beach activities for a significant part of the year - and in the case of the tropical north, all year long.

In addition to the pristine beaches themselves, Australia offers a wealth of coastal adventures that no vacation would be complete without - from exploring coastal trails and sand dunes to embarking on thrilling whale watching tours or surfing some of the world's best waves. The underwater world surrounding Australia's beaches is teeming with vibrant marine life and stunning coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling and diving.

At Aspire Down Under, our years of finding and investigating the best Australian vacation experiences available have taken us to a lot of beaches. After all, no Australian vacation package would be complete without at least a few beach days. And with as many beaches as our island continent boasts, we’ve combed quite a few coasts and surveyed quite a few swells. As our American friends say: It’s a hard job, but somebody’s got to do it.

These coastal gems embody the essence of Australia's beach culture and are sure to provide every vacationer with cherished memories of sun-soaked days and blissful seaside retreats - without further ado, Australia’s top ten beaches to visit on vacation.

10. Burleigh Heads Beach - Gold Coast, Queensland

Part of the dynamic Gold Coast region, one of the fastest-growing in Australia, Burleigh Heads benefits from abundant sunshine, pristine and well-patrolled beaches, and a captivating hinterland of national parks and stunning views. Burleigh Heads is known for its stellar surf breaks and hosts the prestigious Gold Coast Open surfing competition. This beach offers vacationers more than just sun, surf, and sand, though; a grassy park behind the shoreline invites relaxation with barbecue facilities and a playground for families, and the area has a growing reputation for its foodie-friendly restaurant scene.

9. Cable Beach - Broome, Western Australia

Broome's Cable Beach captivates visitors with its powdery white sands, fluorescent blue waters, and thriving marine life. Bounded by scenic sand dunes and striking red ochre cliffs, this coastal gem exudes the authentic charm of small-town Western Australia. Cable Beach’s signature world-renowned camel rides offer a special perspective, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of this expansive beach with a unique twist. At the right time of year, travelers can cross the Broome Peninsula to nearby Town Beach and witness the natural wonder of the Staircase to the Moon over Roebuck Bay, adding a unique celestial touch to the beach's allure.

8. Coffin Bay, South Australia

The most challenging thing about putting together a list of Australia’s top ten beaches is narrowing down the list. One of Australia’s nicknames is “The Lucky Country,” as it seems to be blessed with more than its fair share of beautiful natural wonders, including its beaches. Coffin Bay is an area that boasts several beaches (Almonta, Long Beach, Black Springs…) you won’t want to miss on your Australian vacation, making it a perfect place to spend at least a day or two, and the perfect first entry on this list for us to bend the rules a bit and lump a few of our favorite Australian beaches together. We are officially not sorry, and you won’t be either, once you’ve had a chance to enjoy the clear turquoise waters, soft sands, breathtaking views, and world-class seafood of Coffin Bay.

7. Bells Beach, Victoria

Bells Beach, a legendary destination along the Great Ocean Road, holds an iconic status among surfers and travelers alike. Renowned as Australia's surf capital, this wild beach features intense waves and towering cliffs, attracting surf enthusiasts and sightseers alike. Standing atop the bluffs offers awe-inspiring views of this rugged beach, where some of the best surfers in the world can be watched as they take on the challenging waves. While Bells Beach is a stunning spot for sunbathing and a must-visit for surfers, it's important to note that swimming is not recommended, as the beach is unpatrolled and conditions unpredictable. Also keep an eye out for the abundant local wildlife, including echidnas, birds, and other coastal creatures.

6. Esperance, Western Australia

Somewhat of a “hidden gem” compared to more famous entries on this list, Esperance is far-flung but accessible area along Western Australia’s southern coast. Once again, we have bent the rules to allow Esperance’s many breathtaking beaches into this list. For those who enjoy road-tripping, sightseeing or beachgoing, Esperance’s 40-km Great Ocean Drive (not to be confused with the Great Ocean Road) is an Australian vacation adventure with a little something for everyone. Esperance’s beaches are famous for white sand, dramatic cliffs and capes, abundant wildflowers and wildlife, and a variety of high-swell surf spots and secluded coves perfect for relaxed swimming and fishing.

5. Manly Beach - Sydney, New South Wales

Manly Beach offers an inviting atmosphere, perfect for swimming, surfing, sunbathing, and taking in breathtaking views. One of Australia's most famous surfing beaches, it proudly hosted the world's first surfing championship in 1964. Manly’s soft white sands are flanked by its iconic row of towering Norfolk Pine trees, making it among the most instantly recognizable beaches on this list. Beyond the fantastic surf and scenery, Manly Beach boasts a vibrant scene with contemporary bars and eateries, making it a popular destination for locals and vacationers alike. Additionally, it serves as one end of the iconic Manly Ferry, which treats visitors to a delightful journey with spectacular views of Sydney Harbor and the ocean.

4. Noosa, Queensland

Another fantastic area that boasts several incredible beaches, among many other natural wonders, Noosa is a must-visit attraction for any Australian vacation. The northernmost gem of the Sunshine Coast, Noosa stands out as one of Australia's most iconic vacation havens. This treasure trove of natural beauty, complemented by award-winning dining and captivating events, offers an unparalleled Australian vacation experience. From stunning beaches to serene lakes and the tropical beauty of Noosa National Park, Noosa boasts an extraordinary blend of nature's wonders, including one of the world's only two everglades systems. With seamless integration of accommodations and amenities amid pristine bushland, Noosa invites visitors to embrace nature while still providing opportunities to indulge in exceptional dining and upscale shopping.

3. Bondi Beach - Sydney, New South Wales

Bondi Beach has been a favorite tourist destination for over a century, drawing millions of visitors each year with its soft golden sand, clear blue waters, and a variety of nearby cafes, restaurants, and shops. Its proximity to metropolitan Sydney is only a bonus, as Bondi’s natural beauty stacks up against any of the more remote beaches on this list. Bondi’s northern end offers calm waters for swimming, while the southern end features excellent surfing. The scenic Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk delights walkers and joggers with dramatic views, beaches, parks, and cliffs, and the Bondi Icebergs Ocean Pool, the most-photographed pool in the world, blurs the divide between natural and manmade for an unforgettable Australian vacation experience.

2. Four Mile Beach - Port Douglas, Queensland

Located just north of Cairns in tropical North Queensland, Port Douglas beckons travelers with a sophisticated yet relaxed environment. Four Mile Beach, with its soft golden sands and calm waves, embodies the epitome of relaxation. The beach's northern end features densely populated rocks, creating delightful rock pools for children to play and explore. 1. Whitehaven Beach - Whitsunday Islands, Queensland

To top the list of Australian beaches is no easy task, but Whitehaven Beach is so breathtakingly beautiful that its place as our number one beach vacation destination was never in doubt. Truly a beach that must be seen to be believed, we can tell you that it has soft white sand and turquoise waters - pretty much every Australian beach does, but none quite like Whitehaven’s pure, cool-to-the-touch silica sand and calm, clear shallows. We can tell you it’s nestled into a national park - the Whitsunday Islands National Park - that’s right off the coast of another national park in beautiful, tropical Queensland,, but that’s a woefully inadequate attempt to describe to you this particular beach’s remote, untouched tranquility. Perhaps another time we will attempt to render its beauty in poetry, but for now, pictures are likely your best option other than actually going.
